BA (Econ), MBA, LL.B
My legal practice is primarily focused on corporate/commercial and real estate law to capitalize on my thirteen years of international business experience gained prior to my legal career.
Beyond solid legal counsel, I offer my clients financial and technical knowledge, an analytic aptitude, and practical business acumen, which I acquired through working in the cement, steel, energy, and transportation industries. I have completed projects, ranging from large, complex engagements, to small, entrepreneurial start-ups; all of which involved successful teamwork.
Prior to practicing law, my work experience in industry included managing corporate strategy aimed at effective use of Information Technology, corporate finance, international trade and multi-modal (rail, trucks, barges and deep-sea ships) logistics of bulk commodity supply-chains. For over a decade, I have also enjoyed working as a management consultant and conducting financial, marketing, and risk analysis using complex statistical methods for a variety of large and small companies.
I hold a BA (Economics) and a LL.B degree from the University of British Columbia and my MBA from Simon Fraser University. My graduating MBA paper, “Growth patterns of Canadian high-tech firms and Gibrat’s Law”, was published in The International Journal of Technology Management, in London, UK.
I also hold a Fellow of Risk Management (FRM) designation through the Risk and Insurance Management Society of New York and was commissioned as a Canadian Military Engineer Officer (2nd Lt.) following my military officer training.
The extensive skills I gained through work in industry, both with people in North America and internationally, have enabled me to provide a constructive perspective and balanced understanding to each of my client’s particular legal issues. I am uniquely positioned to provide my clients with appropriate solutions and options, having both legal and practical business perspectives. My experience and analytic background enables me to spot potential pitfalls and give my clients well-rounded guidance that takes into account the “bigger picture”, going beyond just legal advice.
Since being called to the British Columbia Bar, I have chiefly practiced corporate/commercial law (commercial agreements, share/asset purchase & sales, shareholders’ agreements, corporate governance) and real estate matters (commercial/residential purchase & sales and leasing, real estate development, strata property matters). I have handled general commercial litigation matters concerning environmental issues, tax, trust and estate matters.
Over the years, I have advised the boards and directors of a several not-for-profit charities and societies both as clients and on a pro bono basis. I am currently volunteering as an advisor to the CEO and the board of Habitat for Humanity (Greater Vancouver).
